Gartner Confirms Move to Self-Service BI

Gartner this week released its annual Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms research, and we’re excited by one of its key findings. ByMonitor-Mockup2 2017, Gartner said the majority of business users and analysts will have access to self-service tools to prepare data for analysis.

Sound familiar? It should. Izenda has been offering self-service business-intelligence software since its inception. The move to self-service tools should not be a surprise to any organization who has embedded Izenda’s reports, dashboards, and visualizations. Their users already know the value of self-service BI.

“We are thrilled to see user-driven, self-service data discovery predicted to become mainstream in 2017,” Sanjay Bhatia, Izenda’s founder and CEO, said. “We think that most embedding strategies are incomplete. While many providers position their products as ’embedded BI’, their solutions routinely don’t go far enough.”

“They don’t embed the full experience of data discovery, they only embed the final content, which is IT-created,” Bhatia explained. “For example, in some cases, a user can see a chart, but they can’t create it.”

Izenda’s embedded software solution gives users the ability to explore and analyze data in real time in the application that is part of their workflow. Also, Izenda is browser agnostic, responsively designed and renders in pure HTML. There are no desktop tools, no Flash or Silverlight to worry about.

Self-Service and Data Democratization

Gartner had reported in November that half of net-new buying in BI this year and moving forward will be driven by self-service requirements.

Gartner’s latest research indicates that 2015 will be a critical year for democratizing data. Gartner’s research comes two weeks after Gigaom Research, in a white paper underwritten by Izenda, found it is imperative to embed modern BI (reporting, dashboards and visualizations) in the application users’ daily work. This approach is crucial, Gigaom Research stated, because digital natives and a more tech-savvy workforce expect that level of functionality at their fingertips. In a data-driven business world, they don’t want to wait for IT or data scientists to generate a report for them.

Vendors who don’t provide true self-service BI, consider yourself warned.

A Fast-Growing Market

In Gartner’s view, the market for BI and analytics platforms will remain one of the fastest-growing software markets. As a whole, BI platforms grew 9 percent in 2013, and Gartner projects them to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7 percent through 2018. Gartner surveyed 2,083 users of BI platforms as part of the research for this Magic Quadrant, combined with vendor assessments on several key customer metrics.
