Today’s BI & Analytics Number: 50

A day of 50s seems to be the rule on Monday at the Gartner Business Intelligence & Analytics Summit.

Did you know that 50 percent of new information initiatives come from the business side and not from IT? Traditional business intelligence (BI) and analytic models are being disrupted as the balance of power shifts from IT to the business, according to Gartner, Inc.

Following that it’s not so surprising to hear that 50 percent of data investments are going to data discovery and self-service.

The users want useful business intelligence out of their company’s data, and they want it now. They need analytics to drive their decisions. These business users don’t want to rely on reporting teams, data warehousing and data scientists to analyze for them. Self-service is the name of the game. So if they seek self-service, it stands to reason they’d be driving any information initiatives to follow their requirements and not be funneled through IT.

Another 50 From Gartner

Earlier this year, Gartner predicted that by 2017, most business users and analysts in organizations will have access to self-service tools to prepare data for analysis.

If businesses devote funds to data investment, executives and owners will want to know their value. Gartner predicts that 50 percent of them will actively measure and assess ROI on analytics initiatives in the next five years.

“Data preparation is one of most difficult and time-consuming challenges facing business users of BI and data discovery tools, as well as advanced analytics platforms,” said Rita Sallam, research vice president at Gartner.
