Embedded BI Scholarship Applicants Analyze Pitchers, Salaries

Izenda Embedded BI & Analytics Scholarship

Students applying for the 2017 Izenda Embedded BI and Analytics Scholarship used data analysis to determine the value of a Major League pitcher and that of a graduate degree for a physical therapist.

We’re encouraging students at accredited United States colleges and universities to apply by April 30, 2017, deadline.

Students need to tell a story that leverages a data source.

One applicant chose to examine how a Major League baseball team could make a realistic trade of their top starting pitcher. He based his analysis on data about comparable pitchers, in particular noting the Wins Above Replacement statistic. Citing sources of data and projections based on that data, he analyzed the prospects of specific teams in need of better pitching.

Another applicant might be job hunting soon, as she presented a PowerPoint on the salary outlook for physical therapists. Perhaps she’s going to graduate school. Her analysis revealed that “a higher degree earned does correlate with a higher salary when matched for years in practice.”

Wondering what you might prepare to submit for this scholarship competition? We’ve suggested topics including elections, financial market trends, impacts of pandemics, trends in technology and sports. But you might have other ideas. If you can tell a story leveraging data about your idea, you can meet the requirements. Like what you do in college, this work should be your own.

A submission might contain a visualization that shows the impact of a current event on financial markets. Or it could track the spread of a disease against public health interventions. We included links to topics on the scholarship page. Applicants can use other data sources. But make sure you use real data.

And we don’t require the use of the Izenda embedded BI platform. Submit your entry as a text document, spreadsheet, PowerPoint-type presentation or use another common format.

At Izenda, our mission is to create an embedded self-service business intelligence and analytics platform to empower ordinary people to make better business decisions as they leverage data in their organizations’ applications at the point of decision.

We put our hopes in a new generation getting ready to enter the workforce. These outstanding students will drive growth by using data for effective decision making in their organizations.

In a little over a month, the deadline (April 31, 2017) arrives for applications to our $1,000 Izenda Embedded BI and Analytics Scholarship. One undergraduate or graduate student whose interests include a career leveraging analytics to improve decision making will win this year’s scholarship.
