Embedded BI Scholarship Applicants Study Gateway Drugs, Hospital Expansion

2017 Izenda Embedded BI & Analytics Scholarship

A student from the University of Notre Dame wants to use his professional experience with data about heroin use and arrests – including mapping data – to delve into analytics to determine if marijuana truly is a gateway drug.

That’s just one of the latest applications for the 2017 Izenda Embedded BI and Analytics Scholarship, which reaches its deadline at the end of the month. We encourage any college student in the United States who understands the role analytics will play in your career to submit an application.

A George Washington University student presented an entire analytical study, complete with data visualizations, that offers insight into where a hospital group should expand. Types of conditions treated at the hospitals, including cardiovascular, obstetrics, surgery and psychiatry, were examined based on discharges for each condition. Does the hospital have enough doctors, and where do they find more were other queries in the presentation.

A Tulsa Community College student created an infographic using visualizations to tell the story of the Ebola virus with data.

Applicants aren’t required to submit this level of presentation. We’re asking them to tell a story leveraging a data source. This could be an essay describing how they would use data to tell a story. Other ways to share the story include a dashboard, chart or visualization.

We do recommend that students make sure they tell a story using data and not submit a generic essay unrelated to the use of data and analytics.

Last year’s scholarship winner told a story of using data to market the Boston Red Sox to its Kid Nation.

At the end of the month, the deadline (April 30, 2017) arrives for applications to our $1,000 Izenda Embedded BI and Analytics Scholarship. One undergraduate or graduate student whose interests include a career leveraging analytics to improve decision making will win this year’s scholarship.
