Who Will Win the 2017 Izenda Embedded BI & Analytics Scholarship?

Submit your application for the 2017 Izenda Embedded BI & Analytics Scholarship by April 30, 2017

Time has almost run out for college students interested in winning the 2017 Izenda Embedded BI and Analytics Scholarship. On April 30, 2017, the deadline arrives and all submissions must be completed.

Yes, we know that’s a Sunday – but we’ll still accept applications through the weekend. We invite any college student in the United States who plans to use analytics in your career to submit an application. And that could be every student, as analytics plays a part in every industry.

(Moms, dads, friends and neighbors can encourage the college students they know to apply, too.)

We’re asking applicants to tell a story that leverages a data source. This could be a chart, visualization or dashboard that tells the story with data. Students could submit an essay, the time-honored way many educators give out assignments. But make sure you use data to tell the story or explain how you would use data. Don’t reuse old essays, term papers or other class assignments – but if they relate to data, use them to inspire another, different story. Remember, the story is about what the data would reveal.

To help explain what we’d like to see, it’s time for a history lesson. (Don’t worry, there won’t be a quiz.) Clive Thompson of The Smithsonian Magazine wrote an article entitled, “The Surprising History of the Infographic”, which is all about data visualization.

What data story should you tell? That’s up to you. We’ve offered suggestions, such as:

  • elections,
  • financial market trends,
  • impacts of pandemics,
  • trends in technology, and
  • sports

Or maybe you’d prefer to talk about climate change, terrorism or healthcare costs – these topics appear on the news no matter what device you use. One of these or another topic might inspire your idea for a data story.

We’ve already received an application proposing to use data to determine if marijuana is a gateway drug. Another applicant considered potential hospital group expansion plans. The Ebola virus caught another student’s eye. One application analyzed what a realistic trade of a baseball team’s starting pitcher would take. And another college student suggests that earning a higher degree in a specific profession does mean a higher salary when matched with years of service.

We won’t make you use the Izenda embedded BI and analytics platform for your submission. Submit a text document, spreadsheet, PowerPoint-type presentation or use another common format.

Remember, at the end of the month, (April 30, 2017), the deadline arrives for applications to our $1,000 Izenda Embedded BI and Analytics Scholarship. One undergraduate or graduate student will win this year’s scholarship.
