Ten Great Podcasts for Developers

Most software developers take the Thanksgiving holiday off in the United States. Everyone welcomes the break from stress on the job. But pretty soon you start getting antsy. Rather than jump back to your keyboard – which might upset the family – take the opportunity to listen to some new podcasts. It’s a great time to catch up on what’s happening in the industry. Here are a few of my current favorites, with some links to additional best-of lists at the end of this post.

Talking Code

This podcast is described as “Short expert interviews that help you decode what developers are saying.” Top episodes for developers include Making the Most of Your Analytics and How to Become an Effective Junior Developer. And when you’ve accomplished the goal of the second podcast, how about Going from Junior to Senior Developer?

Datastori.es

Learn about data visualization with Enrico Bertini and Moritz Stefaner. Using audio on visualizations topics doesn’t sound like it would work. But by having copies of visualizations on the site, and links to more resources that often include video, it can. You probably won’t want to listen to this one in the car, but it works when you can occasionally check out the visualizations during the podcast.

As Bitcoin continues to soar, listen to Visualizing Bitcoin with Dan McGinn. What do you know about surprise maps? Fill in the blanks by listening to Surprise Maps with Michael Correll and Jeff Heer.

Away From The Keyboard

In this podcast, Cecil Phillip and Richie Rump talk to technologists who tell stories about how they started, grew, learned and how they unwind. In a recent episode, Chris Coyier Puts Pen To Code, Coyier talks about getting started as a web designer. The podcast then turns to how his site, CodePen, got its start.

Coder Radio

This weekly podcast uses a talk show format. It’s described as “taking a pragmatic look at the art and business of Software Development and related technologies.” A recent favorite podcast entitled Selling the FLOSS had Mike and Chris in a debate about building a brand around FLOSS. In addition, they accepted the fundamental problem in sticking with boring and safe platforms.

no dogma podcast

Bryan Hogan holds discussions on software development with developers, CEOs, managers and other experts. Recently Steve Elliot, CEO of Agile Craft, spoke with Hogan about re-architecting software, why and when to do it, and how to do it well.

Full Stack Radio

Adam Wathan hosts this developer-centric podcast on building great software products. Software developers may like this podcast with Justin Jackson, Making a Living from Your Own Projects. Jackson offers tips on how to find ideas from client projects, why you don’t need to get rich off your first product and why you shouldn’t start with SaaS.

Learn to Code with Me

Laurence Bradford created this podcast to help other beginning coders start out strong. She said she’s driven by the goal of making education affordable and accessible to all. If you want to learn How to Break into a DevOps Career, then check out the episode with Dr. Nicole Forsgren, the CEO and Chief Scientist at DevOps Research and Assessment. She’s best known as the lead investigator on the State of DevOps Reports, the largest DevOps study to date.

DevOps Cafe

DevOps Café got its start in the long phone calls Damon Edwards and John Willis used to have to discuss the DevOps movement. John started recording the calls, which inspired them to start interviewing people who fascinated them within the industry. In DevOps Café Episode 76, Randy Shoup, VP of Engineering at Stitch Fix, joins John and Damon to talk about building high-scale systems and teams, dealing with multiple generations of technology and practices.

Arrested DevOps

Matt Stratton, Trevor Hess, and Bridget Kromhou host this podcast to “help you achieve understanding, develop good practices, and operate your team and organization for maximum DevOps awesomeness.” Episode 93 was a Live DevOps Call In Show with Nicole Forsgren answering questions about measuring effectiveness, ROI of DevOps initiatives, and other topics. Dr. Forsgren is the CEO and chief scientist at DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA).

Hanselminutes

Scott Hanselman has more than 600 episodes. Developers from across the technology spectrum share their experiences and insights. In a recent podcast, Mike Brocchi on Angular CLI, covered Angular CLI’s architecture and what’s the best way to create a new web app.
