Is There Life Beyond Reporting?

Business intelligence and analyticsHow much of your time do you spend writing custom reports? Probably too much. It isn’t what you signed up for when you decided you wanted to be a developer. Well, leave the reporting to the end users with a self-service business intelligence platform, and start looking at other things that are much more interesting. Here are some topics to look into for 2016.

JavaScript

This programming language once was “derided as an incomprehensible, buggy scripting language shunned by real developers.” But after a long wait, JavaScript was updated in 2015 to the ES2015 standard, which was formerly known as ES6. This updated added loads of new features for you to take advantage of in your code. Most browsers are adopting the new standard as part of their regular release schedules, so there will be plenty of support for new code generated to this new standard.

Project Management

While not a programming skill, it can be very valuable for developers to learn the basics (or even the not so basics) of project management. It will certainly make those meetings with the PMs go much smoother if you can understand them when they start talking about the PMBOK standards and earned value management. Instead of being nebulous concepts that sound more like a Charlie Brown teacher talking, you will be able to interface with them on their level and actually carry on some meaningful dialogue.

Mobile Apps

Mobile is where it is at. More and more people are demanding that their favorite desktop applications have, at the very least, a mobile counterpart. That is because people spend more time with their tablets and cell phones in hand than at their desk in front of a monitor and keyboard. Take the plunge into Swift for iOS or flex those Java muscles for Android. Either way, it can be a fun diversion to delve into the mobile world for a while and see what kind of touch screen magic you may be able to create.

Python

The release of Python 3.5 makes it a great time to jump in and see what you can do with the language. If you have known or used previous versions, then spend some time getting up to speed on the latest release. Python 3 offers many improvements over 2, and this might be a great time to look into upgrading any legacy code you might have lurking around on your servers.

Security

Developers tend to live in a world where everyone is an admin, and the solution is to grant admin rights to every process. If only the real world were such a utopia. Spend some time looking into the nuts and bolts of the security world so that you can see where your next project is going to need to fit into the new paradigm.
